Ghana, our beloved country, is free forever and deserves leaders of integrity. Leaders who rely on dishonesty cannot represent our nation. Our founding fathers, the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, did not build this country on lies. Therefore, it is essential that we hold any potential leader or president to the same high standards of truthfulness.
Earlier this week, Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar, posted on social media, claiming to be the first Black or African to deliver a speech at the United Kingdom Parliament. According to his post, the speech was an apology on behalf of African leaders for their mismanagement, which he stated has contributed to the current state of the continent.
This claim quickly sparked a heated debate, both online and offline. Supporters of Nana Kwame Bediako argued that he is the future of Ghana, asserting that the country’s leadership should move away from the two traditional political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Some even argued that since he has his own wealth, he would not misuse state resources, and therefore, he should be given the opportunity to lead the nation.
On the other hand, critics, particularly from the NDC and NPP, accused Nana Kwame Bediako of being dishonest and self-serving. They argued that his personal ambitions are not aligned with the best interests of Ghanaians. As they often say, “the devil you know is better than the angel you don’t know.”
But why did this statement cause such a stir? According to a fact-checking investigation conducted by Fact Check Ghana, it turns out that Nana Kwame Bediako’s claims were not entirely truthful.
The Truth Behind the Speech
Fact Check Ghana’s investigation revealed that while Nana Kwame Bediako did indeed deliver a speech, it was not in any of the recognized chambers of the UK Parliament, such as the House of Commons or the House of Lords. Instead, the speech took place in a committee room booked by MP Siobhain McDonagh of the Labour Party. The committee rooms in the UK Parliament can be reserved for private events and are available for only two hours per session. Importantly, the speech was part of an unofficial meeting, which is why it was not reported by any prominent UK media outlets.
What Does This Mean for Ghanaians?
The findings from Fact Check Ghana make it clear that Nana Kwame Bediako misled the public with his exaggerated claims. Such behavior raises serious concerns about his suitability for leadership. If he is willing to distort the truth for personal gain, how can he be trusted to lead Ghana with integrity?
Ghanaians deserve leaders who are honest, transparent, and committed to the nation’s progress. We must hold potential leaders accountable for their actions and ensure that those who seek power do so with genuine intentions, not through falsehoods. Nana Kwame Bediako’s attempt to mislead the public shows that he is not the leader Ghana needs.
