NDC Set to Return to Parliament with an Overwhelming Majority of 67% Seats – An Unprecedented Victory in Ghana’s 4th Republic

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has evidently won 185 seats of the 276 constituencies to be represented in the chambers of the Parliament.

A massive win which puts the NDC in a very comfortable position within the house of Parliament to be constituted next year after experiences of a hanging parliament in the current 8th Parliament.

With Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the ruling NPP party conceding defeat in the early hours of Sunday, December 8, whilst polls were being collated, the NDC in a press briefing ahead of EC’s declarations made projections of winning 185 seats in the 2024 general elections.

“Our internal collation shows that the NDC has tentatively won 185 parliamentary seats. This reflects the overwhelming confidence that Ghanaians have placed in us to represent them in Parliament,” Sammy Gyamfi stated.

Sammy Gyamfi who is the party’s National Communication Officer went on to explain that the number was obtained by the hard work and diligence displayed by the party agents at the various polling stations to gather data and collate the results as they sent to the Party’s Collation Center.

Thus, the party had already expected the surprising victory by the time the Electoral Commission would have declared the final results which according to him marks a significant milestone for the NDC.

Although the EC is still yet to finalize and declare results from some constituencies six days after the elections, the NDC has won 185 seats out of about 272 constituencies which have been officially declared. An absolute majority for the NDC ahead of the NPP’s 80 seats.

However, the party remains optimistic with regards to remaining seats yet to be officially declared hoping to win as more seats as the voters have decided.

This decisive win presents the NDC with an opportunity of a two-third majority which is the constitutionally required number for effective Parliamentary assembly and decision making.

At a crucial time in the country's democratic governance, many have expressed varying opinions which suggests this is a direction that would be of great benefit to the incoming NDC government and the country at large despite concerns of imbalance of power and Legislative bias.

As it has been, the Political Parties represented in the parliament has in history been in advantage to the governing party as there is always a majority caucus of the governing party.

The majority caucus determined by the party with 138 or more seats has always been clearly defined untill the current 8th Parliament when there was a situation of 137 seats belonging to each of the two main parties.

Refered to as a hanging Parliament, the ruling party maneuvered to obtain the majority after an independent member sided with them to gain the 138 seats as majority group which in actual sense posed a very challenging scenario within the 8th Parliament onto the very last days when the Speaker made a decision to declare the former minority NDC group as the new Majority.

Currently winning the majority with a very wide margin of seats difference including historic wins in typical strongholds of the NPP party across the constituencies of the sixteen regions, It is clear the Ghanaian voters have decided to grant the NDC a privilege to have full control of the legislature in decision making and a trust to reshape or restructure the form of the legislative arm of governance.

The NDC is confident of a very smooth and effective legislature which would be protected and used in the benefit of serving the country as well as propose, amend and rectify the constitution which is a priority of the incoming NDC government.
